Stop Playing Synthesizer Cliches!
Since I have... :::ahem::: strong (if objective) views on a variety of topics relating to synthesizers, I decided to make a series about it. This episode was a bit of an experiment, and I suppose serves as the first effort.
This is featuring the AMAZING Christine Anderson of WakeUpDreamland, as well as the Mellotron Micro I have extensively demonstrated on my Patreon account.

    There's an aspect to Dr. Moog's modular synthesizers you mention here that I don't understand, and it's this question of polyphony with multiple keyboards. The basic Moog IIIc system had 9 oscillators from 3 banks, but only a single output. That much I know. But, you mention that the synthesizer can be controlled via multiple keyboards. So in theory, the IIIc system could play a triad if three keyboards were connected, each playing one note. If so, does that truly make this a monophonic synthesizer? Is it a 3-voice synthesizer, or is it 3 monophonic synthesizers combined in one chasse, with a single output? I understand that it's not a 3 voice synthesizer in the sense that there is no digital scanning keyboard or voice allocation system, but nevertheless the oscillators are able to play pitches independent of each other, correct? Maybe I'm thinking about this wrong, but it seems like in theory, if you kept adding oscillators to your modular system, you could have played as many notes as you wanted, providing you had an oscillator module and a keyboard for each note. The keyboards are all monophonic, but the synthesizer itself, to me, appears to be capable of polyphony. Is this wrong? It's kind of hard for me to wrap my mind around!

    The Volcas have been very influential, making affordable hardware synths for the masses. We're still getting new Volca models 10 years later, Roland's portable Aira synths are also inspired by Volcas (Rolca?) and Behringers Mini and micro synths also play homage to the Volca series (I have a Bolca VS Mini, it's great!)

    Funky analog arpeggiator. I love the step type, to break straight count monotony. I would definitely work up a unique sound (like you have), and then run it through my external guitar pedals. I'm getting one. Thanks for the informative demo!

    I see synths turning into guitars and im not into it. Guitar players have a roadmap; get lessons, practice covering other people’s music etc. synthesists have to form their own style over years of learning and lots of isolation, I think the lack of community kept it special. The guitar route is essentially creative conformity (tell me what to do), synths have always been the opposite. Im pretty sure the “content” and “ affiliate” world might be at fault.

    supersaw is 7 sawtooths stacked up and then detuned, though the original jp8000 didnt use unison to achieve the effect due to it being too computationally expensive. i've heard they used some janky-ass method with noise and special filters that emphasised the sawtooth harmonics within that noise and simply widened the peaks to generate the detuned copies but dont quote me on that.

    Thanks for making this video. It's an excellent demonstration of the different modes. A regular paraphonic synth shares a single filter. Since the MiniFreak has 6 filters, it would try to make the best use of them. So for instance you could press 6 keys in rapid succession and each note gets its own filter. For keys 7-12 it would have to reuse the first/oldest filter for each new note and the key that the filter was taken from would have to combine with another old key's filter. A cheesy name could be "Pair-a-phonic" where each pair of notes could share a filter. This likely isn't exactly correct since the keys-to-filters don't necessarily have to be in pairs. Perhaps hexaphonic polyphony would be more accurate to indicate some kind of rotating recycling/reuse of the filters for the 12 notes.

      @automaticgainsay 8 дней назад

      I have written, spoken, and produced a lot of content regarding the confusion about what constitutes polyphony, and what, conversely, constitutes articulation of polyphony (filters, envelopes, amps). Companies have vastly muddied the waters of clear description of these various functions, unfortunately, and the telephone effect of the Internet hasn’t helped!

    I’m not impressed with the sound of PolyBrute, comparing to the other analog synths (and even some digital), particularly from the brands like the Roland, Korg, Moog, Oberheim and Sequential. Maybe it’s because of the filters, maybe because of the oscillators, maybe because of something else. There are certainly some good and warm sounds that I like, but if synth is analog and costs so much as it costs I expect to be blown away by the sound but I’m not. :)

    • @automaticgainsay
      @automaticgainsay 15 дней назад

      Totally fair. I have to say that whenever I go through the presets, I kind of feel that way, too… which may sound crazy for a guy who holds the PolyBrute as high as I do. But when I author sounds with it, I have the opposite experience. It is just so capable of giving me what I want when I make my own sounds. And, when I had the “identify the Minimoog” contest awhile back, most people, even Minimoog owners, chose the PolyBrute! But still- it doesn’t matter what a synth is, or what people think of it… if it doesn’t work for you or to your ears, it’s a bad choice… I totally agree.

    • @roggyo
      @roggyo 12 дней назад

      @@automaticgainsay Maybe I should spend more time with it and as you said try to make my own sounds. That’s how you really become familiar with the synth and connect with it. But it’s impossible with YT demos and even in music stores, where you can try it just for limited time. But it’s not necessary that everyone likes some synth. You can look on it even as an advantage, because less musicians will use it in their music, so those of you who are using it, have more chance to stand out from the crowd with your sounds. Finally the fact that many professionals actually do like this synth, it means that it is a good synth, just it’s not for everyone, and it makes it even more special for those of you who like it. :)
